MENTHOL TOBACCO PRODUCTS TO BE BANNED IN 2020 AS STRICT NEW LAWS ARE ENFORCED

Menthol cigarettes and menthol roll-ups will be banned in the UK this year in an attempt to discourage young people from smoking. 

The purchase of cigarettes and rolling tobacco with any “characterising flavours” will no longer be an option for smokers as the UK steps up its bid to be a smoke-free country by 2030. The ban will kick in on May 20th and officials are hoping that it will deter young people from picking up the habit. Researchers believe that menthol cigarettes act as an easy route for children to start smoking and Deborah Arnott of Action on Smoking and Health has recently stated: 

“Research shows that menthol in cigarettes makes it easier for children to try smoking and to go on to become addicted smokers. Getting rid of menthol cigarettes will reduce the likelihood of young people taking up smoking, and make it easier for smokers to quit.”

Roughly 12.4% of all smokers in the UK use some type of menthol cigarette or rolling tobacco, so the change in laws will affect a significant portion of the smoking community. The ban, under the new EU Tobacco Product Directive laws, also includes the sale of skinny cigarettes and click dual cigarettes that allow you to seamlessly switch to a menthol cigarette with the click of a button. The new ruling means that it will be illegal to manufacture or sell a cigarette or hand-rolling tobacco with:

• a filter, paper, package, capsule or other component containing flavourings;
  
• a filter, paper or capsule containing tobacco or nicotine;

The UK’s impending exit from the European Union is unlikely to impact the introduction of the menthol ban, therefore smokers will need to begin considering alternatives soon.
